Peter Verhoeven comes with an extensive financial services experience in core business units, country and regional management. His forte is in developing strategies that successfully restructure businesses, turning around and refocusing them to ensure profitability and sustainability. Credit and Risk tested in four different credit crises (Asia, Middle East and USA) at Senior Credit Officer (SCO) level II.
Following a twelve month internship at Republic National Bank of Dallas, Peter started his humble career with Citibank AG in Germany in 1981. Peter’s stint at Citibank lasted 13 years and covered several positions starting with numerous roles in the Hamburg and Frankfurt Branches where he was responsible for building the trade and documentary business with both local clients and Citibank’s global network. When the S&L crisis hit the US Southwest Peter was sent first to Houston, Texas to manage relationships with regional financial institutions (banks and S&Ls) across the Southeast United States and then to San Francisco to help rebuild the Pacific Rim FI Business.
In 1990 he joined Deutsche Bank AG as the Director of Strategic Planning in their Singapore Regional Head Office. In 1992 he was made Deputy Country Manager in Jakarta, Indonesia with the specific task of restructuring the bank’s languishing franchise. This was to be the first of many restructuring assignments in Peter’s career. As CCO and Managing Director, Manila, Philippines from 1994 to 1998 he established Deutsche Bank’s de-novo Manila Branch (ranked top five foreign branches with a balance sheet of ca USD 600 mil), led transactional product sales, and established the first Asian trust operations.
Peter re-joined Citibank and was assigned to Hong Kong as Managing Director for Global Clients, where he implemented a stand-alone small and middle market business strategy across Asia. While in Hong Kong Peter was responsible for several M&A transactions in Korea, Hong Kong and Thailand. In 1999 Peter was seconded to Citibank Belgium and Luxemburg as CCO and Managing Director where he refocused the business on top tier globally operating businesses and local fund management capabilities quadrupling the revenue base in just four years. He was instrumental in generating numerous investment banking successes, including premier Belgian IPO (Interbrew) and M&A transactions (Interbrew, Delhaize and others).
Peter later joined Standard Chartered Bank in 2003 as its Managing Director and Regional Head for South East Asia where he restructured and refocused the business and led the way with numerous market first transactions in both traditional as well as investment banking, and as a result moved SCB up league tables in all product categories. Leveraging his previous M&A experience with Citibank Peter was a key member of the Bank Permata acquisition team.
Building on his success in turning around the South East Asian business Peter was assigned as the Managing Director and Regional Head Americas in New York. His achievements there included expanding the client base, and broadening product cross-sell, achieving revenue growths in excess of 30%. He also helped in the implementation of Basel II region wide, and supported SCB’s acquisition of Amex Bank.
In the Middle East, Peter worked as the COO for Bank Al Bilad in 2008, and then as Advisor to the CEO of Riyadh Bank in 2013. He later joined KFH as Group Chief Wholesale Banking where he restructured and rebuilt the bank’s group wholesale banking business. Aside from refocusing the group’s business, he also wrote the Group Credit Risk Acceptance Policy, the Policies and Procedures Manual and the Underwriting Standards for the Wholesale Bank.
Peter has an MBA in International Finance, University of Dallas, Dallas, TX and BA in History and Political Science from Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA, USA. He is married and has two sons. He is fluent in several languages including English, Danish, Dutch, German, Swedish and Norwegian and functional in French.
